At work I decided to open Health savings account (HSA) - this is special type of individual pension account that you can use for health related expenses.
Usually your company enrolls you in and you just need to register online and small amount of your monthly income will be allocated into this account.
So I tried to do the registration part on a provider’s site. But it didn’t work, I was able to save my personal data but after that site would enter infinite spin.
Ok, so I got a phone number to call the support. I’m on the phone again - read how I like calling support here - I’m waiting 40 minutes just to talk to the operator. Great start!
Finally I was connected to a real person and she tells me she cannot find my account and that I should contact company I work for - after 40 minutes of wait time. I asked her to double check and at the second try she found my account - bad sign, she didn’t want to help me that much originally.
Now that she found my account I explain her the problem. Immediately she says “You probably has blocked popup in your browser.”
I check my screen and I see that tiny Safari icon telling me that popup was blocked.
Why didn’t developers of this site showed me an error message that popups might be blocked, it seems like support immediately knew about this problem?
Ok, so I unblocked this popup and got redirected to another site that was promptly blocked by Cloudflare. I tried the same thing from 3 different computer and 1 mobile phone - no luck. I tried VPN - no luck.
I told her about the issue and she didn’t have the solution and said that she will open the ticket.
The call lasted 1 hour 14 minutes.
No solution was found.
The only thing I had on my mind was Jerry Seinfeld question to George Costanza who was lying with his pants down on the floor: “And you wanted to be my latex salesman?”
How is this company are going to manage my Health savings account? What expertise do they have if they cannot make a website for me to register properly? Can I trust them with my money?
Reflections:
- most companies are not good in any industry. Pareto distribution strikes again.
- you might be an expert in your field, but if you cannot execute on simpler things surrounding your project - you will lose trust.
- if you deal with people’s money - please do proper support.
